Inflammatory conditions

Chronic inflammation has been recognized as an important feature of almost all diseases!

Inflammation is a complex response of cells and tissues in our body that aims to protect us from harmful events such as attack by pathogenic viruses and bacteria, cell damage from UV radiation, irritants or chemicals, and other harmful stimuli. It is a protective attempt by our body to remove the attack and initiate the healing process for the affected tissue. This type of inflammation, referred to as acute localised inflammation, is a positive and necessary process in our body. Without this inflammation, wounds and infections would never heal.

Acute localised inflammation involves increased vascular permeability, fluid leaking into the tissue causing swelling, and the movement of white blood cells into the injured tissues. Increased blood volume and vasodilation causes redness. Cascades of biochemical events mature the inflammatory response. These cascades involve certain signaling molecules, called pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6), chemokines, and lipid mediators (prostaglandins and leukotrienes) that are part of the programmed response of our immune system which engages immune cells like activated macrophages, dendritic cells, and mast cells and restricts the tissue damage to the site of inflammation.

Chronic Inflammation
However, inflammation can also become a chronic problem in our body and contribute to many different health problems. Over the past decade, chronic inflammation has been recognized as an important feature of almost all diseases including allergies (like hay fever), asthma, atherosclerosis and heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, psoriasis, lupus erythematosus, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and many others.

Chronic or prolonged inflammation leads to a progressive shift in the type of cells which are present at the site of inflammation and is characterized by persistent reciprocal activation of macrophages and T cells and elevated levels of pro-inflammatory mediators which can lead to ongoing tissue destruction and causes intermittent or persistent pain.

Drugs used to treat chronic inflammation, called anti-inflammatories, inhibit, sequester or inactivate the inflammatory mediators or the enzymes producing these mediators. The long term use of such anti-inflammatory drugs is associated with a high risk of side-effects causing considerable damage to our body, e.g. in form of stomach-ulcers, liver and kidney damage.

Many flavonoid compounds in the Enzogenol pine bark extract, the active ingredient of ENZO Professional, are natural anti-inflammatory compounds. Proanthocyanidins (OPCs), the most abundant group of flavonoids in Enzogenol, are not only very strong antioxidants, but have also shown to inhibit key enzymes involved in the inflammatory cascade. In addition, several other flavonoid compounds present in the Enzogenol have also shown anti-inflammatory effects.

ENZO Professional can not substitute for drugs that a physician may prescribe in order to calm down severe chronic inflammation and to relief associated pain and discomfort. However, ENZO Professional may provide that extra help to keep chronic inflammatory problems in check and reduce the associated discomfort in the long term allowing to reduce the ongoing use of pharmaceutical drugs.
